FALL SEMINAR 2000
|
|
On October 13 through 15, 2000, we
were fortunate to host a KNPV seminar at our kennel with Jan Huiting and
Jos van den Berg. Our goal was to educate both handlers and decoys about
the way the KNPV trains certain exercises, how to handle a fully trained
KNPV dog and how to properly decoy a dog in KNPV. A
very nice group of people came from all over the US and even beyond, to
attend the seminar and greatly contributed to its success.
We like to thank
both our instructors as well as all the participants and onlookers for
their presence and sportsmanlike behavior. We hope to see all of them
come back for our future seminars!

The seminar covered several KNPV exercises, not all
related to bitework. Falko from Baytown, Texas PD demonstrates his
ability to scale a 1.75 meter KNPV wall.
|

The long down may not be the most spectacular
part of the obedience, but it is very important as a way to exercise
control over the dog.
|

Another excellent means of control and necessary part
of any training is a correct heeling pattern.
|

While the handlers are trying their hand at the obedience exercises of
KNPV, some of the decoys are gathered around Jos, soaking
up his instructions.
|

After the obedience exercises and the decoy
instruction, the seminar continued with some basic bitework that
especially the young dogs enjoyed. Hari Amrit with Kamps

There is a first time for everything: first sleeve bites for six month old
Ivo, and first time using a sleeve for Jos. Many trainers in Holland do
not even own a sleeve and their dogs go from a tug to the suit.

GUARDING THE OBJECT
One of the exercises of the KNPV program, is guarding an article. The dog
is put on or behind an article that he has to defend from strangers.
Innocent passers-by are to be left alone, but somebody with the intent to
take the article from the dog, is to be attacked without any command from
the handler who is out of sight from the dog. After the bite, the dog is
to release by himself and return to the article to continue guarding it.
The following three pictures of Paco, Nico and Noeska depict the dogs in
various states of guarding.

BITEWORK
All the dogs were 'introduced' to the decoys, so they got to know each
other. This close in work between decoy and handler is also used for bite
building. The following five pictures depict the handlers, dogs and decoys
working on the various stages of bitework.

DECOYS
Both experienced and less experienced decoys had been
absorbing Jos' instructions and demo's long enough to try their own hand
at it. They all turned out to be sports and they all did well despite
some, undoubtedly, scary moments for some of them.
