Letters of Reference

To: Guy and Judith Powell

From: Robert M. Garza

Reference: K-9 Reebok

I had wanted a narcotic detection K-9 for several years but being a perfectionist I studied many kennels and trainers. I finally decided on Seven Pines Kennel. When I spoke with Guy on the telephone he seemed very knowledgeable and easy to speak with. I liked the fact that you were able to acquire quality dogs at a reasonable price. I read the letter s of reference on your web page and found them encouraging since I had never handled a K-9 myself and I read about new handlers leaving your training facility and immediately doing well.

Chief Garza and K9 Reebok
Gregory, Tx. P.D.

Reebok, the Malinois you selected for me, is exactly what I wanted. Reebok is a very pretty dog that turns heads with his looks and then works very impressively.  The day after we certified with The National Narcotic Detector Dog Association Reebok went to work. Reebok searched six cars and made three finds on the first night. We have made presentations to the City Council and Mayor and they were impressed. We have also done a demonstration for a Cub Scout pack and they loved getting to touch Reebok. I know that most of the problems with K-9 teams start with the handler. Once I got home we developed a problem and I immediately called Judith and told her what was happening, we were able to come up with a solution that worked perfectly. The knowledge and expertise that Guy and Judith have and their willingness to help is immeasurable. I highly recommend Seven Pines Kennel and Guy and Judith Powell to any person wanting a highly trained K-9 and a wealth of knowledge that you can tap into.

Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern,

This Department recently purchased a patrol/narcotics detection-trained Belgian Malinois from Guy and Judith Powell at Seven Pines Kennels in Longview, Texas.  Included in that purchase was 4 weeks of training for our chosen handler with the dog.  This was a new young officer who had never handled a working dog before.

Within 5 days of returning to us, the new K9 team certified to the level of Master Police K9 with the Texas K9 Police Association.  Within the first 3 weeks, the team was assisting the Narcotics Unit with narcotics and money seizures and extending a Public Relations hand to the citizens by appearing at several K9 demonstrations.

Officer Felder and K-9 Pecco

Baytown, Tx  P.D.

The dog, a 3 year old Belgian Malinois imported by the Powell’s excellent connections in  Holland, is fit and agile, responds well to the new handler’s commands as a result of the Powell’s training and is even-tempered enough to allow for both the occasional school children hanging all over him and the occasional aggressive response needed to defend his handler or subdue a suspect.

If you or your Department are looking for a new K9 to start the K9 Unit for the first time or to reinvigorate an older, established one, I highly recommend calling the Powell’s at Seven Pines Kennels.

Guy, Judith, Thanks for turning out a great new K9 teams!!!

To whom it may concern,

The Paris Police Department (Paris, Texas) purchased a male Malinois in June 2000 from Seven Pines Kennel in Longview Texas.

The canine's name is Anthos, and is handled by officer John Berry. Anthos is a social, and very good natured animal. He is very good in narcotics detection, as well as his handler protection, building searches and bite work. Officer Berry is a new handler, and received four weeks of training with Anthos.

The Paris Police Department has an existing K9 unit, being officer Dale Wood, and canine Billy. Billy is an 8.5 year old male malinois, trained in narcotics detection, Patrol duties, building searches, human scent tracking and criminal apprehension. He has been with the department for 6.5. years. Officer Wood and Billy have been going to Seven Pines kennel for updated training under Guy and Judith Powell since 1999. Officer Wood and officer Berry feel that Guy and Judith Powell are two of the most competent trainers that they have been associated with.

Seven Pines Kennel (Guy and Judith Powell) have numerous overseas contacts as well as several contacts inside the United States. They have an excellent working relationship with this department and it's K9 teams. John and Anthos are a good working K9 team with he help of Guy and Judith and their continuing interest in the development of the team. We have made several phone calls to Guy and Judith about both K9 teams, and they are always helpful, professional and courteous. At this time, there is a consideration by this department to purchase additional canines from Guy and Judith for Bomb detection and for a replacement for Billy who will be retiring in about a year.

Both officers Wood and Berry highly recommend that anyone looking for a good canine/training with continued support from 2 top notch trainers, consider talking to Guy and Judith Powell at Seven Pines Kennel regarding their purchases/requirements.

Dear Guy and Judith,

As a volunteer member of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue team, I purchased a nine month old Dutch Shepherd named “Channa” from Seven Pines Kennel of Longview, Texas in April of 2000.  At the time of Channa’s purchase, I was “green handler” with almost no experience in training or handling a dog.

Seven Pines Kennel, Channa van Neerland

Channa was certified as a Wilderness Search Dog in February of 2001 after only four months of training.  Since certification, Channa has received over 400 additional hours of training in wilderness and collapsed structure searches, helicopter operations, location of Alzheimer’s patients as well as competing in the sport of Schutzhund.

Channa’s desire to please and her ability to learn new tasks quickly are extraordinary.

Monterey County is a geographically diverse region with urban areas at sea level and brushy, mountainous terrain that quickly rises to over 5000 feet from the ocean in only a few miles.  Channa has the stamina to work long after most dogs have given up due to exhaustion or boredom.

Channa has participated in six actual searches since February of 2001.  She was instrumental in helping the SAR team locate a lost fourteen year old boy.

Channa also excels as a “demo dog” for the Sheriff’s department.  She is capable of awesome flying hits on a decoy, then climbing a tree to fetch her toy. After watching Channa’s bite work, children are surprised by and love her gentle, affectionate temperament during school safety programs.

Throughout Channa’s training, both Guy and Judith Powell have been a tremendous resource for me, freely sharing their knowledge and experience.  More importantly, I feel that the Powells’ conduct their business extremely honestly.

Without reservation, I recommend Seven Pines Kennel as a source for working dogs, particularly the Dutch Shepherd.

Sincerely,

Wayne Radochonski / Volunteer

Hereby the General Committee of the KNPV declares that Mrs. J. van Heugten has worked as office manager for our organization from August 1, 1986 up to and including July 1, 1997.

During this period she has managed the office personnel as well as all activities in a very correct way and to our complete satisfaction.

Moreover, she has done all the things mentioned above in a very independent, active, creative and responsible way. The work she supplied was of an outstanding quality.

When she told us she wished to end her career with our organization we regretted that enormously. Nevertheless, we accept her decision and wish her all the best for the future.

 In the meantime we remain,
On behalf of the General Committee,

E.W.J. Leenders, Secretary

It has been my pleasure to know Guy Powell for the last two years. During this period, Guy has never failed to impress me with his intense knowledge and professionalism in the area of the Police K9.

Over the past two years Guy has assisted me in the training of my dog in preparation for Street Patrol Work.

I would be proud to serve with Guy Powell any where, at any time. When it comes to the area of Police K9, I could think of no better person to fill a position of responsibility, in summary, I am proud to recommend Guy Powell to your employ.

Respectfully submitted,
Patrick S. Curran

Trooper New Hampshire State Police

This is regarding the Rusk County Sheriff's department K-9 program.

Guy Powell trained K-9's Britt and Vox. Our narcotics dog Vox has assisted the department in seizures of approximately 800-1000 lbs of marijuana in the four (4) years he has been in service.

Narcotics are becoming more and more difficult to find due to new concealment techniques of drug traffickers. With the us of the K-9, drug seizures are common. Vox is also used for searching ten (10) public schools throughout Rusk County. He also helps break any tension there may be in student officer relations.

Rusk County Sheriff's Office patrol dog, Britt, is a benefit for his ability to track, search buildings and control crowds. When dealing with a large crowd, public usually will not respond to officers commands. However, they show a lot of respect to the K-9 when he steps out of the unit and usually begin to comply. I have been a K-9 handler for four (4) years. I feel that K-9's are a benefit for the department and community and in certain situations a valuable asset.

 Darryl Norris,
K-9 handler
Patrol Deputy

To whom it may concern,

It has been my honor and privilege, to know Guy Powell.

For almost three years, I have had what I thought to be the most 'hard headed' malinois in the world.  Guy showed me better.

By working with Guy over the past few months, I now have the dog I have been looking for.

Guy's knowledge and love for the police working dog, not the mention a great training facility, is the reason for his success as a dog trainer. Guy has never failed in helping me and my K-9 partner.

Because he has worked with me and my dog, I have not only been able to certify in obedience and aggression with he North American Police Dog Association, but with the North Carolina Police Dog Association as well. No one could be more proud of their dog than I, thanks to Guy Powell.

I recommend him to anyone who has  Police work dog. Whether you have a problem with your dog or if the team is having a problem, Guy can help. I have been to several seminars and have met several trainers all across the county and even Holland.

I can only say that if there were more trainers like Guy, Police dog teams would be the most sought after job in Law Enforcement.

Respectfully,

Lt. C.V. McCrary II
Brevard Police Dept.

To whom it may concern,

I was employed as a patrolman-canine handler for the Naples, Texas Police Department. In August 1988, with donations from local merchants, the department and I purchased a German Shepherd PSD named 'Mike' from Guy Powell in Longview Texas.

Much appreciated were Guy's thorough instructions on how to handle 'Mike' and the time that Guy spent with us on patrol. During 'Mike's' career, he was credited with numerous felony apprehensions and had a very high success rate on his tracks. We were also called upon many times to assist other police departments in the area.

Let me assure you that Guy Powell is not only an excellent dog trainer, but also a person of high moral character. He is more than able to fill any position he seeks in the area law enforcement dog training. East Texas has never known a trainer of the caliber of Guy Powell.

 Sincerely,

Gary Wilson

Dear Guy,

Hi, this a short letter to offer to you my sincere appreciation for everything you have done in assisting Bill Hollinger and I in importing KAI, our KNPV titled Bouvier. It is by far one of the nicest dogs I have ever worked with and is everything you said he would be. He scored a 434 in his PH1 and his temperament is the best I have seen in any working dog in a long time.

Seven Pines Kennel, Kai van Zuudloar
"Kai van Zuudloar"

I want to thank you for being so honest and for helping us import in my opinion one of the finest dogs I have ever owned. It just is a reflection of your honest attitude and your sincere attitude. You obviously have a connection in Holland to locate top quality dogs that can do anything, KNPV, Schutzhund, IPO, Ring Sport, Etc.

Please feel free to use my name and phone number and or email address as a reference to attest to the quality dogs you can  import. And I also want to tell you I am sure that Kai and I will be at the top of the podium in the not so distant future. He is a great dog and a real powerhouse in the work, and my children’s family companion.

Again thank you for all your help.

                                                              Sincerely,

                                                              Dean C. Anderson

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Guy Powell and Seven Pines Kennel for providing our Department with two outstanding Narcotic Detection/Tracking dog candidates. Both of the dogs ( female Belgian Malinois ) have proven themselves to have excellent drives and temperaments for the work we do. Both dogs and their new handlers have graduated and received certification as narcotic detection dog teams on Nov.1st 2002.

Guy has shown himself to me to be a man of honesty and integrity. I will continue to due business with him as we have need, and am proud to recommend his kennel to anyone looking for a good dog.

Sincerely,
Kevin Mahr
